Stephanie Ritter graduated from Florida State University in 2011 with a degree in theatre. She recently expressed anger and frustration with the job market prospects for a theater graduate and her current underemployment as an ‘assistant.’ As a result, Stephanie is hoping her college diploma is worth more than the actual degree she received, which is why she listed it for $50,000 on eBay.
Ritter in a statement to BuzzFeed said:
“I thought this piece of paper has so much worth to so many people, but for a theater major, it couldn’t mean less,” she said. “I’m doing the exact same things and probably getting paid the exact same amount as people that dropped out halfway through freshman year, except I’m still $40,000 in debt and they’re, well, not.”
Unlike other dissatisfied graduates who have tried to sell their diplomas online in the past, Stephanie’s comes with a twist. She is also selling her ‘experience’
Here is the description for the eBay listing:
Stephanie says if she had to do it all over again, she would. But next time, she would attend college in a city so that she can earn more to support herself, as well as choose a college that is more queer-friendly.
“FSU was great, but there were, like, 1,000 straight white men for every queer person,” she said. “I didn’t realize how important being around other gay people would be until I recently joined an amazing group of mostly queer women and thought, Oh! This is what I could’ve felt like in college?”
If the eBay listing doesn’t work out, Stephanie has a brilliant plan B:
“If that falls through, honestly, [I will] just do that thing where I pay the minimum for 25 years and then the government feels so bad for you that they wipe it clean,” she said.
I suppose suing your guidance counselor for giving you horrible career advice is plan C, Stephanie?
