Seven was born in Manitwoc County, Wisconsin to Allan and Dolores Avery. He had three siblings Earl, Chuck and Barb. In 1985 he married to Lori Mathiesen and they had four children anmed Rachel, Jenny, ,Steven and will. Since his teenage period, Avery was a bad guy, at the age of 18 he was convicted of burglarizing a bar and was sentenced to ten months in Jail. In 1982, he was convicted of animal cruelty for pouring gasoline and oil on cat and throwing it into a fire, he was sentenced nine months to prison. In 1985 at the age of 22, he he was charged with assaulting his cousin after he ran her off the road at gunpoint. He was sentenced to six years for endangering the safety of another person.

In 1985 Steven was convicted of first degree sexual assault and a first degree murder. He served 18 years in prison. He maintained his innocence and after results of improvement in DNA testing, the results were concluded that someone other than Avery committed the crime and that match was found to Gregory Allen. He was released from prison on September 11, 2003. After releasing from prison, he filed a federal lawsuit against Manitowoc County, its former sheriff and demanded $36 million to recover from his wrongful conviction. In 2006 he reportedly settled his $36 million lawsuit for $400,000.

On December 18, 2015, Netflix released Making a Murdered, a ten episode documentary series based on Avery’s trials.
